Commission
I love the
challenge of creating an original work of art that is designed
specifically and only for you. I take pride that a commission
work is a one-of- kind. Your piece can be designed for a specific
space, tailored for an exact fit. It is the challenge of the artist
to get the feel of the space, to understand the context, and to
create a work of art that truly belongs where it is placed.
If my work is to go into a church, I like to read the bulletins,
to look at photographs of the church and the setting. If it is
to go into a place of business, I like to learn about that as
well. If it is to go into your home, I'd like to see pictures
of its location, too. After learning a bit about the setting,
I will offer a design proposal for your consideration, including
sketches of the proposed work and, of course, a price estimate.
Once the design is approved, I will send you a formal proposal
with a description of the work to be done, a time line, and a
payment schedule, often with a deposit of 50% down, with the balance
on delivery. If the work is substantial, the payments may be split
in several installments: (1) on approval of the design, (2) at
the completion of the models, and (3) on delivery. That way, the
client has approval options as the work progresses. The Time Line
can vary from several months to a year or more. I typically keep
a photographic record of my progress and keep you informed via
the web.
Commissioning art can be a very rewarding experience for you. You participate in the planning, follow the progress, and acquire work that is yours and yours alone. . . . And you won't page through a catalog and find one just like it! It is the "meeting of the minds" between artist and client that I truly enjoy!
